- Wisconsin Rep. Joel Kitchens’ AB321, which would require early literacy screeners, provide interventions for struggling readers, ban three-cueing and align literacy instruction and teacher preparation programs to the science of reading, was voted out of the Assembly and now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
Northeast
- Delaware Rep. Kimberly Williams’s HB138, which would establish the Delaware Educator Apprenticeship Program, passed the Senate Education Committee. This pilot program would place aspiring teachers in paid positions in schools while they complete the training and schooling necessary to become a credentialed teacher.
- Pennsylvania Rep. Emily Kinkead’s HB897 would strengthen college pathways by providing all Pennsylvania community college students who earn an associate degree from an accredited college with guaranteed admission to the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education with junior standing. The bill passed the House and heads to the House Appropriations Committee.
- Pennsylvania Rep. Danielle Friel-Otten’s HB1331 would create a Student Teacher Stipend Program to provide financial assistance to students enrolled in an initial teacher certification program. Additionally, the bill provides for teacher vacancy data collection and a public job posting database. The bill passed the House and now heads to the Senate.
Southeast
- South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster signed the South Carolina budget, H4300, which includes $39 million for K-3 teachers to complete early literacy aligned to the science of reading as well as a ban on the three-cueing method of reading instruction.
