Iowa Legislature Strengthens Early Literacy

About the Legislation 

HF 2618 strengthens early literacy education in Iowa. Key requirements of the law include: 

• Institutions providing teacher preparation programs must administer the newest version of The Foundations of Reading assessment based on the science of reading for teacher licensure. 
• Students in teacher preparation programs must pass the literacy assessment to graduate, and institutions must report the results.  
• Districts must provide personalized reading plans for any student in K-6 who is not reading at grade level.  

The legislation now heads to Gov. Reynolds’ desk for signature.
