South Carolina to Expand College and Career Education Opportunities

South Carolina

Patricia Levesque, Executive Director of ExcelinEd in Action, issued the following statement on the passage of South Carolina’s latest career and college pathways legislation:

“South Carolina lawmakers are building a workforce of the future with this important legislation. Strong and streamlined governance and a statewide workforce development plan makes it clear that preparing students for success in the jobs of tomorrow is a priority.

“Thanks to the work of Speaker Murrell Smith and Rep. Jay West, South Carolina’s students and employers are gaining access to more robust workforce data to better inform their planning and job-related decision making. South Carolina’s families and its economy will be the beneficiaries of this resourceful approach.”

About the Legislation

H3726 will create the Office of Statewide Workforce Development to develop and oversee a statewide workforce development plan. This plan will help ensure greater coordination across agencies and help to identify and address workforce needs. The plan requires the creation of a career pathways tool to inform curriculum, education initiatives and workforce planning. Further, it requires an annual supply gap analysis to help evaluate current and future labor market needs.
