Gov. Jeb Bush, founder and chairman of ExcelinEd in Action, issued the following statement applauding the passage of the Students First Act, which creates a new education savings account program in Iowa.

“The Students First Act will positively transform the state’s education system, giving Iowa families the freedom, flexibility and resources needed to customize their children’s education.

“Gov. Kim Reynolds and other leaders throughout Iowa went to bat for students—ensuring the legislature is firmly focused on families who are eager for more educational opportunity. By championing this ambitious education agenda, Gov. Reynolds and the Iowa Legislature are putting every Iowa student on a path to reach their God-given potential.

“I applaud Gov. Reynolds, Speaker Pat Grassley, Senate President Amy Sinclair, Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver, Rep. John Wills, Rep. Skyler Wheeler, Sen. Brad Zaun and members of the Iowa Legislature for their vision and leadership on this significant legislation.”

The Students First Act (HF 68) passed both chambers this week and has now been signed by Gov. Reynolds. The program will allow Iowa families to apply for an education savings account. For eligible students, the state will then deposit nearly $7,600 (equal to the state’s annual per-pupil funding) into the account to help parents send their children to a school of their choice and cover other educational expenses.
