Iowa Passes Comprehensive Math Reform to Strengthen Achievement and Support Student Success 

“Iowa’s new math policy tackles longstanding proficiency challenges with a comprehensive, research-driven approach. By equipping educators with evidence-based training and early screening tools, the state is ensuring students get the support they need to build a strong foundation in math. 

“Math proficiency is critical for individual student success and our nation’s economy. This policy takes a proactive stance—identifying struggling students early, delivering personalized interventions and strengthening family engagement—to improve learning, close achievement gaps and prepare students for college, career and lifelong success. 

“I am grateful to Gov. Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Legislature for their leadership and commitment to student achievement. With enactment of this policy, Iowa is setting a national example for how states can prioritize math excellence and give all students the opportunity to succeed.” 

About HF 784 

HF 784 strengthens math education in Iowa by: 

• Screening K-6 students for math proficiency at least three times a year to identify those at risk and providing struggling students with early intervention. 

• Developing personalized math plans for students who are persistently at risk, ensuring they receive targeted support to improve math skills. 

• Providing ongoing professional learning for teachers to strengthen math instruction, particularly in high-need schools. 

• Creating and distributing family-centered resources to help parents support their children’s math development at home. 

• Establishing a statewide math plan through the Iowa Department of Education to promote consistency, quality and higher student achievement.
