Alabama Legislature Improves & Strengthens Tax Credit Scholarship Program

Alabama

In a bipartisan vote of both houses, the Alabama Legislature passed legislation (SB 261) to improve and strengthen the Alabama Tax Credit Scholarship Program. The legislation increases the cap on individual and corporate donations from 50 percent of their tax liability to 100 percent, up to $100,000. These changes should increase donations to the program, allowing as many as 2,000 additional students to receive a scholarship. The legislation also strengthened the program by allowing scholarship granting organizations to roll over unused funds to serve students the following year.

Patricia Levesque, executive director, ExcelinEd in Action, issued the following statement on this student-centered victory in Alabama:

“Alabama legislators put students and families first by improving and strengthening this important program which provides thousands of students access to the school of their choice. Every student is deserving of a quality education and this requires students have access to multiple educational options. I commend Sen. Dan Roberts, Rep. Danny Garrett and the entire legislative body for their support of this important program.”

SB 261 is currently awaiting Governor Kay Ivey’s signature.

An earlier version of this release mistakenly identified an increase in the cap of the tax scholarship program when in fact the changes refer to an increased donor cap of tax liability.
