Strong Student-Centered Proposals in South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster’s Budget Proposal

Statement from Josh Thomas, ExcelinEd in Action Legislative Affairs Director, on strong student-centered proposals in South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster’s FY 2021-22 budget proposal. 

“Governor McMaster knows that now more than ever, investments in education are an investment in students’ futures and in making South Carolina a remarkable place to learn, live and work.

“This budget is a strong blueprint as South Carolina policymakers continue to confront the education challenges from the global pandemic. Under the governor’s leadership, we are confident that the needs of students will be prioritized in those discussions.”

Highlights of Governor McMaster’s proposals include:

• Fully expanding full-day 4K programs
• Investing for teacher step salary increases 
• Funding that travels with students in public charter schools, ensuring equity for all students and public schools
• A $60 million investment to help South Carolina students prepare for in-demand jobs
• $30 million to expand critical broadband access to more South Carolina households
