Nevada Leaders Take Bold Steps Toward Personalizing Learning

June 08, 2017

Governor Brian Sandoval has received Assembly Bill 110 after unanimous passage by the legislature.  The legislation directs the department of education to launch a pilot program to support personal learning initiatives.  Pilot participants along with the Chancellors of the Nevada System of Higher Education and Western Governor’s University and appointed parents and teachers will form the Competency-Based Education Network.

“This new education model is a great step toward establishing more personalized learning for each child.  Nevada’s recognition of the need to transition to a more personalized system of learning will better prepare students for the demands of the 21st century workforce.  This legislation will empower the state’s innovative educators to redesign their schools away from rote focus on seat-time and age to one where students advance based on what levels of learning they have mastered.” – Patricia Levesque, ExcelinEd in Action Executive Director

A component of personalized learning, competency-based education is a system of instruction where students advance to higher levels of learning as soon as they demonstrate mastery of concepts and skills regardless of time, place or pace. This benefits all students with a customized plan and can include fundamental changes in schedules, calendars, assessment and grading.
