Mississippi Passes Major Education Reform Package

Mississippi

Patricia Levesque, Executive Director of ExcelinEd in Action, issued the following statement on Mississippi's passage of adolescent literacy and math legislation:

“Mississippi has long been a national leader in early literacy, and this legislation takes a critical next step by extending that focus into the middle grades, ensuring adolescent students continue developing the reading and decoding skills essential for success. By addressing this previously unmet need, lawmakers are reinforcing learning progress beyond the early years and strengthening outcomes for older students.

“At the same time, Mississippi is making a major investment in improving math performance. Through classroom coaching, educator professional development, universal screeners and access to high-quality instructional materials, the landmark Math Act equips both students and teachers with the tools necessary for sustained success.

“By improving math and reading instruction and expanding opportunities in computer science and financial literacy, this legislation emphasizes core academic foundations and real-world readiness. Together, these efforts will better prepare students for long-term success—both in the classroom and beyond graduation.

“We are grateful to Gov. Tate Reeves, Superintendent Lance Evans, House Education Chair Rob Roberson, Senate Education Chair Dennis DeBar and Sen. Nicole Boyd for their leadership and commitment to advancing comprehensive policy solutions that will serve students throughout their educational journey.”
