The Texas Senate approved a bill today that would give Texas families more power to choose the best educational fit for their child.
Senate Bill 3, sponsored by Senate Education Chairman Larry Taylor, creates an Education Savings Account (ESA) for Texas public school students in the largest counties in the state. It also creates a Tax Credit Scholarship Program for select at-risk students, specifically students with disabilities, low-income students and students in foster care in these same counties.
Governor Greg Abbott has joined lawmakers, including school choice champion Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, in supporting this legislation.
With ESAs, parents can direct their child’s funding to the schools, courses, programs and services of their choice. Parents are also able to save unused funds for future education expenses.
Tax credit scholarship programs incentivize individuals and businesses to donate to nonprofit organizations that provide tuition scholarships to eligible students. These programs use entirely private funds and provide the ability for families facing particular challenges to find the best educational option for their child.
“This is a wonderful day for everyone who cares about ensuring every child in Texas has the opportunity to pursue their dreams. Finding the right fit for each child’s unique needs is the key to success in education, careers and life. We applaud Governor Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Patrick, Senator Taylor and so many others who are leading this effort.” – ExcelinEd in Action National Legislative Director J. Alex Kelly
